Experience the benefits of mat yoga and mat Pilates classes at Infusion

I am much more than I think I am. I can be much more even than tat. I can influence my environment. The people. I can influence space itself. I can influence the future. I am responsible for all those things. I and the surround are not separate. They're part of one. I'm connected to it all. I am not alone.

The Benefits of Yoga in a studio

Sometimes students ask if it's worth paying for a yoga or Pilates studio if they have a membership where yoga and Pilates are offered for free. For Pilates, the answer is always yes, since our Pilates studio is reformer training and that's not free anywhere. The answer for yoga depends on what you value in your yoga experience.

All of our teachers have attended at least 200 hours of Registered Yoga Teacher Training, so their education has taken precedence in their lives. The yoga studio has been set up to create the most peaceful environment possible. We have several classes to choose from every day, in a range of skill levels from beginning to advanced yoga. Our specific goal is to meet the individual needs of each student..

Yoga can lay the foundation to transform your body with personal power and an understanding of yourself. You may learn to feel inner peace and serenity in challenging situations...See more.

WEIGHT CONTROL-- Yoga can help with weight loss by conditioning the abdominal and lower back region . When this core of the body is lean and strong, the stomach is smaller and firmer. Yoga heightens your sensitivity to the effects food has on your body as well as your emotional state as you eat. In choosing food you are consciously trying to energize your physical body and sub-consciously trying to balance your emotions. So, if you can calm the mind, you can calm the appetite1. Yoga training will help you break unhealthy patterns naturally by cleansing and clarifying the body of toxins as it seeks to re-establish harmony within the frame of the body. A yoga teacher was once asked by a new student if smoking would interfere with her yoga. The teacher replied, No, but yoga would interfere with her smoking.
STRENGTH-- Athletic yoga takes the heart rate to 60% to 70% of maximum effort which trains the body with perfect efficiency. Strength is gained when smaller muscles are engaged in postures (asana's) requiring them to hold a variety of weight. Larger muscles are lengthened and then used to stabilize and steady the body while contracting. This has the same benefits as strength training, while also realigning the body.
OTHER BENEFITS--Poses from yoga will de-activate the fight or flight response1 and bring differences in everyday life. Stress related illnesses are on the rise. It's estimated that 60% to 90% of all patient visits to a physicians office are stress related and not easily understood or treatable3 so mind, body and spirit exercises are especially healing. Other benefits include increased immunity, more efficient digestion, positive energy, self-discipline, increased endurance, balanced hormone levels, and deeper, more rejuvenating sleep habits2 You learn to care for your body in a healthy way.

Ultimately, the greatest gift yoga may bring you is the ability to build a body free of fear and repetitive negative patterns. Yoga will lay the foundation to transform your body with your own personal power and understanding. You will learn to feel inner peace and serenity in a challenging situation. How you use your body is an expression of your soul. Yoga creates beautiful expressions.

How Yoga Heals.

It has become common knowledge that yoga is good for you. Currently yoga is being used as a therapy for cancer, infertility, lung disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, insomnia, high blood pressure, and joint pain. Yet there is very little awareness and understanding on exactly how yoga heals, even in the yoga and medical communities. The key is to understand the relationships between stress, yoga and disease....See more.

Medical research estimates as much as 90 percent of illness and disease is stress related. A few of the many diseases and conditions that have been linked to an over active stress response include: cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, some types of diabetes mellitus, some autoimmune diseases, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, reproductive problems, and suppression of the immune system.

What we feel as stress, is the product of the sympathetic nervous system or the "fight or flight" response: an almost instantaneous surge in heart rate, cardiac output, blood pressure, sweating, shallow breathing, and metabolism, combined with a tensing of muscles. Internally, the "fight or flight" response shuts down digestion and elimination and reduces blood flow to the internal organs. Short term, this stress reaction is a good thing. The "fight or flight" response prepares us to respond to any environmental threat by fighting against it or fleeing from it. But long term, continuous exposure to stress is harmful, placing excess wear and tear on the body's systems and severely limiting the body's natural maintenance and healing abilities.

Chronic stress can lead to continuously high levels of cortisol. This hormone at normal levels helps to maintain an active, healthy body (including regulation of metabolism and blood pressure). But excessive amounts of cortisol can suppress the immune system and cause sleep disturbances, loss of sex drive and loss of appetite. High levels of cortisol can also increase your heart rate, blood pressure and your cholesterol and triglyceride levels (risk factors for both heart attacks and strokes). The byproducts of cortisol act as sedatives, which can lead to changes in mood, especially to feelings of depression.

Fortunately, the body has a natural counterbalance to the "fight or flight" response, called the parasympathetic nervous system or the "relaxation response" The parasympathetic nervous system becomes activated when the threat or stressor has passed or ended, but it can also be consciously activated by deepening the breath and by relaxing the skeletal muscles. When activated, the parasympathetic nervous system lowers blood pressure, heart rate and respiration (the pace of the breath). Digestion and elimination are allowed to be stimulated, and blood is free to travel to the digestive, reproductive, glandular, and immune systems - systems necessary for the promotion of long-term health. The "relaxation response" is also known as the "rest and renew" stage, when the body has the time and resources to heal the body and to respond to illness. Obviously, by increasing the frequency, time and depth of the "relaxation response" we not only allow our body to recover from illness and disease, but we also practice preventive medicine by allowing the body to perform all of its essential maintenance tasks.

Yoga's emphasis on long, deep breathing and conscious relaxation activates the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes its "rest and renew" functions. In fact, a recent study has shown yoga to decrease the level of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood. The meditative practices of yoga help to reduce the reactiveness of the mind to stressors and to lessen the intensity of the "fight or flight" response. Yoga also teaches us to see potential stressors as challenges rather than threats, enabling one to avoid the stress response entirely.

Not only does yoga's ability to activate the parasympathetic nervous system reduce stress and allow the body to heal itself, but the practice of yoga also improves the body's inherent healing abilities. The inverting, twisting and compressing that occurs in yoga postures enhances the circulation of blood and body fluids. This increase in circulation not only improves the body's ability to deliver the materials needed to allow healing to take place, but also activates the lymphatic system to maintain normal functioning of the immune system and inflammation response.

Yoga poses also improve muscle strength, flexibility and range of motion, all very important for the healing and prevention of musculoskeletal diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Yoga's emphasis on deep breathing combined with backbends improves lung capacity and function. Practicing yoga also encourages one to lead a healthier lifestyle, through developing the self-awareness and discipline required for positive behavior modification.

While yoga possesses such a strong support to the body's healing mechanisms, it is important to view yoga as an adjunct or complementary therapy, and not relied upon as the only therapy for healing disease.

Real People, Real Stories...

I was introduced to and have been practicing yoga for 2 years at Corena Hammer's Infusion Yoga and Pilates Studio. I'm very thankful to Corena and the amazing teachers at her studio who have opened doors for me to receive changes that I love in my body and mind.

I've never had a flexible body or a strong upper body. Now, at almost 50 years of age, I'm the most flexible I've ever been. I actually have muscle contour on my arms and upper body. I feel stronger and rejoice in my body as it helps me fill my purpose in life....See more.

For me, yoga has been a "gentle on the body and mind" form of exercise that has blessed me with long, strong muscles. I feel I'm being kind to my body as I practice yoga. I can feel how my muscles work for me and how to exercise them while protecting my joints at the same time. My breathing is deep and enlivening. My mind has become more clear, flexible, and open both on and off my yoga mat.

When I am practicing on my mat I am connected with my soul. I no longer compare myself to my "neighbor" and their abilities (which are usually much greater than mine). I feel where body wants to work or rest that day and then choose the level at which I'll practice each pose. The teachers are great at offering ways to modify or advance the poses and to guide me individually in working with my body.

I've grown to love and feel connected with those I practice with. There is a lot of love, joys, sorrows, and even recipes shared among us.

- I LOVE YOGA! Lorene

I had always loved to exercise and been consistent with it, but as a runner/biker, I was always in pain and suffered from poor health. Among my many health problems, I suffered from bowel discomfort, acne, back pain, and depression. Doctors treated each of these problems individually without ever finding the cause. Finally, an OBGYN discovered that I had a 2.5lb tumor in 2002.

A week later, I had the tumor and my right ovary removed. I felt better for a little while, but then the same symptoms reoccurred. In 2005, the doctor found 27 cysts on my left ovary and diagnosed me with Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). After treating it with medication, I still had symptoms and cysts. I started doing yoga regularly at Infusion the summer of 2006. My symptoms decreased significantly. Women with PCOS suffer from increased inflammation, but I found that my joints didn't hurt anymore. I also found that I had less anxiety and depression, two other symptoms of PCOS. I had much more energy. In January of 2007, I returned to the doctor for my yearly ultrasound and discovered that I had only 3 cysts on my left ovary! I had also lost 8lbs! Yoga at Infusion was the only variable!

So many things have improved in my life since I started at Infusion. I still bike a lot, but it never hurts. My depression is not only gone, but I'm more positive and optimistic than I've ever been before. Hide this content.

Yoga at the Studio is more than just exercise; it's also a wonderful community of caring people. I feel welcome and supported even though the folks at the studio have never seen me with make-up on or wearing anything more trendy than a beat up pair of faded capris. It really has made a difference in my life, and I look forward to doing yoga forever!See more.

I have scoliosis and after 6 months of reformer training with Infusion Studio my back felt better and I measured 1 inch taller!

I'll be 64 years young in June 07. I can put the "young" in that sentence because of Yoga. This has been the most difficult time of my life. In November 05, my husband and I quit good paying jobs, sold our home in California and moved back to Utah to be near my aging parents. I didn't expect their dying process to happen so quickly after arriving, but it did. After an exhausting, illusive and confusing journey in and out of hospitals, nursing homes and finally their own home, Mom died in August 06 and Dad followed in November. My sisters and I are selling our family home of 52 years. After that I will end my work as executor of their estate and start to recreate my life.

I tell you this because I want you to understand how emotionally and physically stressed I've been the last year and a half. The one main thing that kept me balanced dealing with this painful reality was my commitment to Yoga. I joined Infusion shortly after arriving in Utah, determined to keep myself healthy and vowing to practice Yoga for the rest of my life. I don't want to develop the diseases or use the prescription drugs my parents did with prostrate cancer, pancreatic cancer, osteoporosis, heart problems, arthritis, high blood pressure, macular degeneration, anxiety, depression and Alzheimer's.

Yoga has been a gift from God. I can get up off the couch now without having to take several slow steps to "get my legs under me". I sleep really well. I have an amazing amount of gentle energy, flexibility and stamina to play with my grandchild, animals and work in my yard. My body has changed shape, I've lost weight and I'm in the smaller clothes I've been saving in the back of my closet. My husband is still looking for "the perfect job" that he had in California. Throughout his stressful process of finding work, I've been able to stay supportive, stay away from fear and not "take on" his anxiety. My mind stays calm and positive. I absolutely do attribute my improving physical, emotional and spiritual health to Yoga. I love it. It's a wonderful way to start my days. I look forward to the classes and plan each day around them. The friends I've found at the studio are so caring and gentle. The most "safe space" I have in my life is my yoga mat and Infusion studio. Thank you!See more.

Thank you. Your yoga is truly inspiring, I have gained so much confidence in the last 8 months from your instruction. Playing the victim no longer serves me or anyone, and I am done with it.
Here is the other thing I feel blessed with. So many years I thought running was the only thing to do, and yes it served it's purpose at the time, but even runners can do yoga. I truly never thought I would love yoga as much as running and I do. EVEN MARATHONERS CAN DO YOGA!! (I have actually lost weight doing it, and better on my whole body) I know I have a lifetime of learning ahead there is so much to know but just want to Thank You again for your acceptance and grace. You continue to let your light shine through. Bless You.
   Namaste, Michelle

I look forward to our yoga practice every day. I always leave feeling relaxed and revitalized. It seems to strengthen my confidence and coping skills as well. Now I know I can handle whatever comes my way!

Yoga at Infusion has opened up to me a real sense of life. Not just living day after day, come what may. But to enjoy every day as a gift. Every day has a purpose, everyday is real.
