FEARS & MYTHS
I've heard yoga was a religion.
Yoga was a way of opening the body for the purpose of enlightenment. It can help you gain perspective, wisdom and clarity. It gives the mind a softening towards grace and ultimately equanimity. It can definitely enhance the spiritual aspects of your life, regardless of your religious preference if you have one. We are not promoting any religion here, just a meditative experience that deepens your own sense of peace and balance.
If I'm going to try this, I'm going to wait until I can really commit to it so I can see results.
This "all or nothing" attitude stops many people. You could be benefiting right now from 1 class per week. You may eventually have the time and desire to come more often, but right now just start with one class per week and you'll still experience benefits. Try being more flexible ( funny, huh?) about your time frames, such as evenings some days and mornings and Saturdays on others. Start with something that is a good idea and then ease into what you think is best.
Is yoga just for girls or weird guys?
No way! One of our best teachers is Ron Hammer, college football star and former big news wrestler. He teaches yoga and Pilates Reformer training and says this is the next great step for your fitness level. The flexibility you gain and the focus you learn will create that edge you're looking for.
Will I fit in? I'm worried everyone will know what they're doing or be really different looking than me.
When you come into our studio, you'll notice that everyone looks just like the rest of the community we live in. Some less fit, others more, some like matching clothes and others love their P.J. bottoms. We've got a great welcoming spirit in the room. Choose a class that suites your style. We've got lots of beginner classes and you can go from there. We all had our first class at one time or another and the other students will be happy to have you in. There are no experts in our beginner classes!
I'm already involved in fitness and worried that yoga and Pilates won't keep me in shape.
I was there once. As a triathalete and former certified gym rat, I thought I would definitely lose some of my fitness level. I was so wrong! It's a different type of workout. It will work you, but you recover at the same time, so you don't feel depleted. It's something I would have started years ago, if only I had known.
I want to get more flexible before I start doing yoga otherwise I won't be able to do it.
It isn't going to happen that way. We've had some of the stiffest bodies you can imagine come through these doors. We've had clients who could barely touch their knees when they bend over. Come to the Gentle Yoga or Tri-Yoga classes first. They move a little slower for those who are stiff. The warmth in the room will help with the tightness, too.
I've seen poses in those Yoga and Pilates magazines. There's no way I can do that!
Really? Neither can we! Most of our instructors can't either. The couple of instructors who can do those poses rarely teach the big stuff and when they do, there are so many less dramatic versions of it we can teach. We're all about safety first, not showing off.
It just looks weird.
You got us there. It does look weird, but if millions of Americans continue to embrace it and add to the growth, does it really matter? Doctors are prescribing it and health care companies are beginning to pay for it. We have a culture that is stressed, gaining weight and losing sleep. If doing something that looks a little weird can be the solution, it's worth it.
